Tango Notes

Poses

It’s always a pleasure to finish a tango dance with a nice pose.   Some of these can be very dramatic,  yet they are within the range of average dancers.  Some may only be appropriate for photo opportunities or stage dancing.  Unless you are familiar with a song, it is often difficult to time these poses correctly.

Miriam & Leonardo (miriamleonardotango.com)

Each of their pose videos has fairly detailed comments on how these are done.   This advice is especially useful because it applies to many similar moves.

TANGO POSES: How to end the song at the Milonga (Episode #4)[VideoML03] This is one of my favorites.  Their tips are very useful for many final poses.
TANGO POSES: How to end the song at the Milonga (Episode #2)[Video ML05] A very nice, simple ending for a songs that end with a very sharp “chan chan”. Good with music with sharp rhythm.

Julia Gorin & Jonatan Baez (juliajonatantango.com)

These professional dancers in Buenos Aires have put together a collection of ending poses in one Youtube video.  Julia speaks in Russian (her English is excellent so this must have been intended originally for a Russian audience) and Jonatan adds commentary in Spanish, but there are good subtitles in English.

I’ve selected some poses from their 21 minute YouTube compilation [Video JG01] JULIA GORIN & JONATAN BAEZ online class “CHAN-CHAN” or tango poses for photos”  All poses below are identified by their starting  time.

Pose at 2:09They start with this, which is the same as the Miriam & Leonardo #4, for a good reason – it is one of the most popular.   Here they show it at three levels, from little descent to all the way to the floor. It starts with an Americana.
Pose at 3:05Another popular pose that starts similarly to the previous, but the follower turns to face the leader from the side with the leg on the leader’s leg.  They show it from a couple of angles with variations in the positions of the heads.  It starts with an Americana.
Pose at 4:31Another popular pose starting with an Americana.  Two head positions are shown: facing or with the follower looking out and the leader at side of the follower’s head.
Pose 5:17Altho described as a variation of the previous pose, it appears entirely different because the follower’s left leg is back instead of forward.  If you and your partner are sufficiently athletic, they also show this going all the way to the floor.
Pose 6:25This is another useful pose that starts in the cross system with both left feet near each other.
